For the second consecutive season, the Oswego State Lakers’ season ended in the National Semifinal as they dropped a 5-3 decision to the Adrian Bulldogs Friday night at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, MN.  Andrew Mather scored two powerplay goals while Ian Boots added an even strength tally.  Shawn Skelly scored a pair for Adrian while Zach Graham, Andrew Dovey, and Mike Towns (EN), found the back of the net for the Bulldogs.  The Lakers trailed by two twice before tying the game at three early in the 3rd.  Skelly scored the game winner just 1:02 later.  Adrian fell to St. Norbert College, 4-3 Saturday Night in the National Championship Game.

The Lakers advanced to the NCAA Semifinals in Minneapolis, Minnesota with a 7-5 victory over the Bowdoin Polar Bears at home on Saturday Night. Four goals would be scored in the first period with Paul Rodrigues getting the scoring started on a 2 on 1 rush at 7:04. Brendan Reich tied the game at 10:44 as he sneaked in back door. Five minutes later, Jon Whitelaw scored a powerplay goal to restore the lead before Bowdoin tied it once again with just a minute to go, Reich scoring his 2nd of the game. The Lakers went back on top when Luke Moodie deflected in a Hank Van Boxmeer shot at 7:30 of the 2nd period, but Bowdoin would once again rally as Jeff Fanning scored on the powerplay at 9:04. David Titanic, who netted only one goal during the regular season scored his first of two on the night at 18:36 to make it 4-3. The Polar Bears tied the game early in the 3rd when Harry Matheson trickled one past Paul Beckwith. Titanic’s 2nd of the night would be the eventual game winner at the 5:38 mark. Owen Kelly and Matheson traded goals bringing it to a 6-5 score, before Whitelaw got his 2nd of the game on a deflection to make it 7-5, the final score.

Fredonia shocks Oswego in SUNYAC Semifinal

Ben Waldman scored his 4th goal of the SUNYAC playoffs at 11:34 of overtime, stunning the Oswego State Lakers at the Campus Center Ice Arena last night.  A tight checking game the whole way, Alex Morton started the scoring with a powerplay goal 6:08 into the game.  Luke Moodie would score the lone Laker goal at 8:50 of the 2nd and Waldman would end the goalie duel in OT, taking a pass from Mat Hehr, and beating Paul Beckwith just underneath the crossbar.  The last time Oswego lost to Fredonia in the SUNYAC Playoffs was 2007, right before their eventual run to the national championship.   The Lakers will wait on word for a likely at-large bid and a probable NCAA Quarterfinal home game.

Laganiere’s hat trick leads big win on Senior Night

Four seniors registered a point, three of them scored a goal, and Chris Laganiere led the way with a hat trick as the Lakers rolled over Geneseo, 7-1 on Saturday night.  Only one goal was scored through the first 40 minutes, as Andrew Mather zipped one past Adrian Rubeniuk at the 6:46 mark of the 2nd period.  Laganiere would score his first of the night on a breakaway, 2:02 into the 3rd.  Less than a minute later he added a powerplay tally to make it 3-0.  Owen Kelly would get a breakaway of his own, shorthanded to make it a 4 goal game.  Carson Schell would then get Geneseo on the board at 12:07 but Justin Fox came right back with a powerplay goal, becoming the 3rd Laker senior to score a goal.  Matt Singleton was set up by Kelly and Dan Bremner at 16:23 and then Fox fed Laganiere on a 2-on-1 break at 17:59 to complete the hat trick.  The Lakers will host a SUNYAC Semifinal next Saturday night against either Plattsburgh, Morrisville, or Fredonia.

Lakers bouce back with 7-1 victory over Brockport

Despite giving up the first goal for their 4th consecutive game, Oswego State scored the next 7 en route to a 7-1 victory over Brockport Friday night at the Campus Center Ice Arena.  Paul Rodrigues and Ian Boots each scored twice for the Lakers while seniors Owen Kelly and Chris Laganiere found the back of the net, and Justin Fox added 3 assists.  Matt Singelton also scored his 2nd game of the season while Brendan Rothfuss scored Brockport’s lone goal.  Paul Beckwith made 18 saves for his 17th win.

Morrisville ends Oswego’s perfect SUNYAC season

The Lakers were simply outworked Saturday night as they returned home for the first time in a month, dropping a 5-2 decision to the Morrisville Mustangs. Taylor Vince and Bobby Cass scored the first 2 goals of the game at the 5:45 and 12:03 marks of the 1st period, respectively. Paul Rodrigues would score late in the period to get Oswego on the board. Tyler Swan, who scored twice in the last head-to-head matchup back in November, made it 3-1 as he trickled one past Beckwith following a 5 minute penalty kill by Oswego for a Dan Bremner hit from behind.  Jamie Nelson made it 4-1 just 1:11 into the 3rd period and although Justin Fox scored his first goal in 2 months and the Lakers had several powerplay opportunities, Oswego could not rally. Jame Jarvis would add the Mustangs’ 5th goal at 12:02. The Lakers are next in action Friday as they play host to the Brockport Golden Eagles.

Furious rally leads Lakers to #1 seed in SUNYAC

Needing a victory to seal up the #1 seed throughout the SUNYAC playoffs, the Lakers erased a 3-1 defecit in the final minutes of regulation of their eventual 4-3 OT win in Cortland on Friday night.  Jon Whitelaw opened the scoring with a powerplay goal 6:41 into the game but Cortland would quickly tie it with a PP tally of their own as Jarrett Gold put one five-hole on Paul Beckwith.  Joey Christiano scored the only goal of the second period as he buried a rebound as 12:53 to give Cortland their first lead of the game.  After being shut down by Brittan Kuhlman all night, the Lakers found themselves down 3-1 when Michael Lysyj was alone in front at 16:34 of the 3rd.  Just 15 seconds later, Luke Moodie buried a cross ice pass and cut the lead back to one.  Dan Bremner would score his 3rd of the season 55 seconds later to tie the game.  Paul Rodrigues scored his 2nd OT winner in the last 3 weeks as he capped off a frantic overtime period, going top shelf with just 54 seconds to go.  The Lakers will finish the regular season with a 3 game home-stand kicking off next Saturday night at 7 against Morrisville.
